Pleasantly situated adjacent to the imposing mountain ranges of the Sierra de Tramuntana, the small village of Santa Eugenia offers the visitor the seclusion and tranquillity that one would expect from a typically rural Mallorcan community.

With a resident population of just 1283 people, Santa Eugenia represents one of the smaller villages on the island where the local customs and traditions that are all to commonly overlooked in popular tourist resorts can still be experienced. The remoteness of this village is quite apparent, both in terms of location and perhaps, more importantly, its community feel which is completely detached from anything you may be offered in the major travel guides.

In spite of all this however, you may be somewhat surprised to learn that Santa Eugenia offers a degree of convenience in its location that many other similar villages cannot.

With a distance of around 10 km separating this village from the capital city of Palma, you can be assured that all of the islands major facilities and attractions are only a short trip away.

The village also offers excellent accessibility to the nearby major town of Inca, whilst within the immediate vicinity are set the picturesque neighbouring villages of Santa Maria Del Cami, Consell, Sencelles and Algaida.

In terms of reaching Santa Eugenia from the Son Sant Joan International Airport, the journey itself is, despite its relatively short distance, quite complicated, and we would certainly recommend the purchase of a good map to study before you set out.

Upon leaving the airport, you will need to take the MA-15 towards Algaida. At junction 20, you will need to exit this highway and take the MA 3100, or known locally as the ‘Carretera Ramai a Santa Eugenia’. This will take you to the MA-3011, or, locally named as the ‘Ctra de Palma e Sineu’ which you will need to take for a short distance before getting onto the MA-3040 (Cami de Son Arrosa) to head straight into Santa Eugenia.

Needless to say, public transport links to this village are extremely basic and as far as feasibility goes, we would certainly recommend the use of a private hire car for the duration of your stay.

The village of Santa Eugenia has its roots dating back to the early Catalan conquest. At this time, the land became the property of the first governor of Mallorca, Bernat de Santa Eugènia. It is from this man that the village took its name having been previously known under Islamic rule as Benibazari. Today, the inhabitants of Santa Eugenia are referred to across Mallorca as Taujans.

By the 16th Century, the development of the village was progressing at a steady rate: there were around 60 houses and construction began on the local church. The rectory was built in 1603 where marriages have been celebrated for well over 300 years.

The land that makes up the site of today’s village has however had a history dating back to prehistoric times. A prominent example of prehistoric civilisations is the son vidal talayot which, along with 13 other sites around the village contain a number of caves which were once used as dwellings and burial chambers.

The most well known of these are Son Matxina, ses Coves, Son Tano and can Palou. Indeed, the later was the scene of an interesting archaeological discovery: an ancient bronze statuette of Greek origin which dates as far back as the 5th Century B.C.

Today, Santa Eugenia will hold most appeal to those seeking the solitude and relaxation that the village has to offer over many of the mass tourist areas to the south of the island. Its ideal location makes it the perfect base to explore Mallorca and take in the wide array of delights that is typified within the Mallorcan culture.

Many of the historic sites that formed the early civilisations here provide popular attractions for tourists in the area, whilst the surrounding countryside is good for those that wish to get out and about and go hiking. This is a village rich in authentic local culture and, coupled with its convenient location on the island, make it an ideal base for a holiday in Mallorca.
